Winner of Timber Design Awards 2024
In 2024, Balance Architecture proudly won the prestigious Timber Design Award for its restoration work on The Fernery in the Ballarat Botanic Gardens. Originally constructed in 1887, The Fernery required careful redesign after the original Australian native timbers failed to withstand local climate conditions, leading to its demolition in the 1920s. This award-winning renovation incorporates Cumaru timber, responsibly sourced from Peru, which offers remarkable durability—lasting up to 40 years above ground and more than 25 years in-ground. The design prioritizes natural light, with strategically spaced timber slats, while heritage-approved powder-coated mild steel posts and beams lend subtle structural support. This thoughtful restoration preserves the charm of The Fernery’s interior, blending historic character with modern sustainability and strength.

Testimonials
Andrew Fedorowicz administered a small office refurbishment project for the City of Moonee Valley when I was the Interim Chief Executive Officer there in late 1994, early 1995. He was given an impossible time frame to construct three offices, including a reception area, ensuring that all ancillary services including security arrangements and signage was completed without delay. It was a difficult time being during the Christmas Holiday period.
His documentation was produced quickly and quotes were arranged without delay. He administered this project without fuss primarily because he had a loyal team of tradesmen at his disposal.
I found him easy to deal with and he was ready to execute my of my requests. He is courteous and his credibility is of a high standard. I can thoroughly recommend him for any Architectural and/or Project Administration role.John W Watson
We have engaged the services of Andrew and Amanda (Balance Architecture) on no less than three occasions. Our initial commissioning of Andrew some twenty years ago stemmed from his respectful appreciation of the heritage / era of our home’s style. On each occasion Andrew and/or Amanda have supported our goals through practical design solutions that are aesthetically pleasing, functional and most importantly bring joy to our family life. As busy career people we are often time poor and their attention to detail, knowledge and ability to communicate broadly brings with it the reassurance that the project will be successfully completed to a high standard with good compliance to budget. We impeccably trust the work of Amanda and Andrew and have been extremely happy with the results, but also the journey from engagement to finalisation. Furthermore we have and will continue to recommend them to our dear friends.
